Visitors love September for its joyful celebrations and authentic cultural immersion.

5. November 19 – Garifuna Settlement Day

Garifuna Settlement Day is one of Belize’s most important cultural holidays, celebrated nationwide on November 19 — and Placencia is no exception. The day honors the arrival of the Garifuna people to Belize in 1802, after fleeing persecution on St. Vincent. The Garifuna are descendants of West Africans, Caribs, and Arawak peoples, and they have played a major role in shaping Belize’s culture, music, spirituality, and cuisine.

What Garifuna Settlement Day Celebrates

  • The Yurumein reenactment: a symbolic arrival by canoe

  • The resilience and survival of the Garifuna people

  • Garifuna cultural heritage — music, dance, spirituality, and language

  • Their contributions to Belizean society

What to Expect in Placencia

While some of the largest celebrations happen in southern Garifuna communities like Dangriga and Hopkins, Placencia also holds vibrant local events, including:

  • Live drumming (traditional Paranda & Punta rhythms)

  • Processions and cultural presentations

  • Community gatherings and traditional celebrations

  • Belizean and Garifuna food specials at local restaurants

It is one of the best times to experience the heart and soul of Belizean culture.

🏃 End of the World Marathon

What Is the End of the World Marathon?

The End of the World Marathon in Placencia began in December 2012, just days before the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21, a date many referred to as the “End of the World.” Because Belize is part of the ancient Maya world — with Maya settlement dating back thousands of years — the event carried special cultural significance.

Although the world did not end in 2012, the race proudly kept its name, also inspired by writer Aldous Huxley, who once wrote, “If the world had any ends, British Honduras would certainly be one of them.”

Today, the marathon is more than a scenic race along the Placencia Peninsula. It is a major fundraising event dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for Belizean youth.

All proceeds support high school, university, and vocational scholarships, helping students continue their education beyond 8th grade — a crucial need in Belize, where high school tuition is not free. Over the past decade, the marathon has funded over 100 high school scholarships, 40 university scholarships, and 30 trade school scholarships, transforming lives in southern Belize.

The race is a blend of culture, community, and purpose — making it one of the most meaningful and memorable marathons in the region.
